About UsThank you for visiting my little corner of the web! People always ask me how did I get started making soap? Well, by day, I'm a reference librarian and way back in 1996, one of our patrons requested a recipe for handmade soap. I thought it was a little strange at first. Why would anyone want to make soap when it's so easy and cheap to buy it at the grocery store? But I couldn't say that, could I? (About that same time, I also had a request for a recipe to make paper out of straw. And no, I haven't tried it. Yet!) I started searching books and magazines as well as the Internet and found some recipes for my patron. Then I kept on researching handmade soaps and natural skin care products on my own. I was intrigued by the countless variations of soap that could be made using different vegetable oils, essential & fragrance oils, as well as herbs, spices and colorants. When I finally got around to actually making a batch of soap, I knew I'd never use regular "grocery store" soap again. My handmade soap made my skin feel so good, and soon after my family and friends felt the same way. Now, hundreds of batches later, here I am! I founded Two Rivers Soap Company in 1999. Today it's still a one-woman business that operates out of my home. I make all my products from scratch in my kitchen-or the microsoapery as I like to call it.
Besides my website, and "brick and mortar" store, I sell at the downtown farmer's market in Des Moines, Iowa as well as occasional craft shows throughout the year and various retail outlets. Jennifer Thompson |
